Myrtle is an evergreen shrub that has fragrant white or pink flowers and is native to North Africa. It is also grown in Mediterranean countries such as Corsica, France, Italy, Spain and Tunisia. Myrtle Essential Oil is obtained by the steam distillation of the leaves, twigs, and sometimes the flowers of the plant. It has a fresh and citrus aroma and is yellowish-green in colour.
In Greek mythology, Myrtle is associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. She chose myrtle as her most beloved and sacred plant. She is often depicted wearing a Myrtle wreath on her head. Tradition has it that bride’s head dresses should be made from Myrtle. Even today Greece bridal bouquets include the plant.
Going back in time we can see that the Greeks used Myrtle to treat bladder and lung infections. The ancient Egyptians often crushed the leaves of the plant and added them to wine to treat fever and infection. It has also been commonly used in cough medicines, skin preparations and as a natural remedy for regulating the menstrual cycle.
Today, Myrtle Essential Oil is primarily used in aromatherapy to treat respiratory ailments and in skincare preparations. It is often utilised in the treatment of coughs and chest complaints
When safely place in an oil burner at night, Myrtle Essential Oil can help to relieve a child’s irritable coughing. The oil is also useful in helping to soothe asthma, bronchitis and catarrh.
The astringent properties of Myrtle make it useful in skin care for treating oily skin or acne. It is also a handy ointment base for treating haemorrhoids.
