Understanding Your Basal Body Temperature
What’s in the BBT Pack?
Our BBT pack gives you everything you need to start tracking your fertility:
- A digital basal thermometer that reads to two decimal places
- Six double-sided fertility charts (enough for 12 months of tracking)
- Easy-to-follow instructions
The thermometer has a flexible, waterproof tip and shows temperatures in Celsius.
What is BBT and Why Does it Matter?
When you’re trying to have a baby, knowing when you ovulate can help you get pregnant faster. Your body temperature changes slightly around ovulation, and tracking this can tell you when you’re most likely to conceive. This is called your Basal Body Temperature (BBT).
How Does BBT Change During Ovulation?
Just before you ovulate, your temperature drops a tiny bit. Then, after ovulation, it rises by about 0.2 to 0.5 degrees Celsius. By tracking these changes, you can work out when you’ve ovulated. This helps you plan when to try for a baby.
How to Take Your Temperature
Taking your temperature correctly is important. Here’s what to do:
- Keep your thermometer by your bed
- Take your temperature as soon as you wake up, before you get up
- Put the thermometer under your tongue
- Wait for the beep (usually 1-2 minutes)
- Write down the reading on your chart
Don’t move around, eat, drink, smoke or even talk before taking your temperature. These things can make your reading less accurate.
Understanding Your Body’s Signs
Your body gives you other clues about ovulation too. One important sign is changes in cervical mucus. Here’s what to look for:
- After your period: 3-4 dry days
- Next 9 days: increasing wetness
- Just before ovulation: clear, slippery mucus like egg white
- After ovulation: sticky mucus, then dry again
Why Track Your BBT?
Tracking your BBT helps you:
- Know when you ovulate each month
- Plan when to try for a baby
- Understand your monthly cycle better
- Spot any problems with ovulation
- Feel more in control of your fertility
Things That Can Affect Your Temperature
Some things can make your BBT readings less reliable:
- Being ill with a fever
- Getting up before taking your temperature
- Taking your temperature at different times
- Not getting enough sleep
- Taking certain medicines
When to Have Sex
You’re most likely to get pregnant if you have sex just before, during, or right after ovulation. By tracking your BBT, you’ll learn when these fertile days usually happen in your cycle. Remember, each woman’s cycle is different, so your pattern might not be the same as someone else’s.
Benefits of BBT Tracking
BBT tracking is:
- Free (once you have a thermometer)
- Easy to do at home
- A natural way to understand your body
- Helpful for planning pregnancy
- Useful for spotting cycle problems
Understanding your BBT can make getting pregnant easier. It helps you know your body better and shows you the best times to try for a baby. While it takes a bit of effort to track your temperature every day, many women find it helpful when trying to conceive.
Remember, if you’ve been tracking your BBT for several months and haven’t gotten pregnant, it’s okay to talk to your doctor. They can help you understand your charts and check if everything’s working as it should.
